art-of-pitching

Forget about elevator pitches, Priydarshini Gouthi  –  a graduate from University of Michigan, Ross School of Business as well an IvyPrep alumni – just schooled us in the art of symphony-level self-selling. ‘The Art of Pitching’ workshop wasn’t just about getting into college; it was about crafting a narrative that resonates like a Beethoven concerto. Here are the golden notes we took away:

Why Pitching?

It’s not just about grades and scores. Colleges want students who actively choose them, not passive acceptance letters. A pitch shows you’ve done your research, understand their vibe, and can contribute to their unique campus harmony.

The “Fit Factor”

It’s not just about convincing them you’re good enough. It’s about demonstrating that you’re the missing piece of their academic puzzle. Show how your passions, experiences, and goals align with their offerings. Think beyond the brochure and highlight niche clubs, research opportunities, or professors whose work excites you.

Hook, Line, and Sinker

Forget cliché narratives. We’re all variations on “Hamlet,” right? Instead, discover your unique voice. Find an unexpected angle, a quirky detail, or a personal anecdote that captures attention and paints a vivid picture of who you truly are.

Beyond Originality

We get it, “every story has been told.” So how do you stand out? It’s all about presentation. Use vivid language, sensory details, and a touch of humor to bring your story to life. Remember, essays are more than just words; they’re an immersive experience.

Don’t end with a whimper. Leave colleges wanting more, not flipping the page. Challenge them to imagine you on campus, contributing to their legacy. Ask a bold question, propose a project, or simply express your eagerness to join their community.

College Intel: Research isn’t just for application essays. Dive deep into college websites, social media, and alums networks. What are their priorities? What kind of students thrive there? Knowing their language lets you speak it fluently in your pitch.

Know Your Audience for Effective Pitching

Remember DoorDash at YC Summer Demo Day? They nailed their pitch because they knew their audience. Tailor your essay to the specific college, addressing their unique interests and challenges. Show them you’re not just applying to a name but to a community you want to be part of.

Shark Tank, College Edition

The workshop ended with a bang! We became mini-investors who were divided into groups, each assigned a social media app to pitch within a mere two minutes. The pressure was on, but the feedback was invaluable. We learned from each other, refining our pitches and discovering new ways to capture an audience’s attention.

‘The Art of Pitch’ wasn’t just about writing essays. It was about transforming ourselves into compelling narratives. We learned to find our voices, tailor our stories, and captivate our audience. Now, we’re armed with the tools to pitch ourselves not just to colleges but to any opportunity life throws our way. So, let the symphony of self-selling begin!
